Our Story
Right now, this is my story, but who knows? Maybe my husband will jump in at some point. He’s the better writer, but for now, his job has all of his attention.
I’m writing after two plus years of retirement—two amazing, unexpected, and completely eye-opening years. Right after I left work, in a tear-filled meeting, a mentor—a powerhouse of a woman, former COO, and board member of a major company—gave me one simple piece of advice: chill out. She told me I needed to relearn how to live, that life after a demanding career wouldn’t (and shouldn’t) look the same as it did when I was balancing work and family.
At the time, I nodded along, thinking, Sure, sure, I’ve got this. But wow, she was right.
Since retiring, I’ve embraced a whirlwind of experiences—packing in not just a little, but a whole lot of everything. I’ve served on three nonprofit boards, contributed to a membership committee, an audit committee, and three for-profit boards. I’ve enjoyed classes at Harvard, welcomed two doodles into my life, mentored anyone who reached out, and immersed myself in the family’s real estate and renewable energy ventures. Through it all, I’ve cherished being a wife, mother, daughter, and friend—and even earned a lifetime achievement award. Phew. Turns out, retirement didn’t slow me down; it unleashed the freedom to pursue what truly excites me. But if I’m being honest, while everything I’ve done has been exciting, it’s been a bit too much.
This year, I decided to embrace a new approach. I began to see retirement as a form of entrepreneurship. The more I considered it, the clearer it became that a strong mission is essential for success in any venture—be it a business, a career, or this new chapter in life. Throughout my professional journey, I was dedicated to a collective mission that transcended my individual goals. Now that I’m retired, I have the opportunity to create my own mission—one that can grow and change alongside me. At this moment, this involves taking the time to think, explore, and share my experiences during this phase of life—not only with my friends but also with anyone interested in this journey.
So, welcome! Whether you’re already retired or just starting to think about it, I’d love to hear your thoughts. This stage of life is an adventure, and everyone’s invited.
